Special Educational Needs & Disabilities Help in Greenwich
Help Is Available
We strive to meet the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs/ and or disabilities, and are supported by the Local Authority to ensure that all children, regardless of their specific needs, make the best possible progress. Each setting has a named SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator) who is there to offer support and guidance to parents/carers and children.
With our partners, we offer access to a range of professionals who help to support our families with children with special needs. These include:
- Early years inclusion team -Royal Borough of Greenwich
- Music therapy – Oxleas
- speech and language – Oxleas
- schools re:transition
- Camhs -Oxleas
Our settings are inclusive but we are also acutely aware that families sometimes need bespoke access or support. To understand and provide meaningful services we have supported parent volunteers to establish three specific groups to support children with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND).
Each group is run by parents who have children with additional needs and is targeted to ensure families can access these services.

Autistic Inclusive Meets (AIM)
Autistic Inclusive Meets is an inclusive autistic led organisation that holds two social groups per week, one football session each Saturday and a last Sunday of the month group for autistic children, teens and adults.
Your child does not need a diagnosis to attend.
Our sessions allow time for socialising and exploring new interests while also having an opportunity to keep fit! The parents and carers also enjoy the chance to meet and discuss education strategies, have a cup of coffee and seek support and friendship from each other.
Our Monday session run from 4-6pm at Brookhill Children’s Centre term time and from 3-5pm in the holidays, this group is £2 per family and provides tea, coffee, biscuits and fresh fruit.
We utilise a tuff tray and have a different edible sensory play each week.
This helps to stimulate the tactile, visual and auditory senses to ground and regulate the attendees. We often use scented edible play dohs as well to feed the olfacatory sense.
There are further details of our other sessions here: www.autisticinclusivemeets.org
We have a Facebook group which is exclusively for group attendees, but there is a public page you can follow here which we keep updated weekly with what sensory play and refreshments will be at our Monday sessions, and any events we have coming up: https://m.facebook.com/autisticinclusivemeets/
We are also on Youtube, Twitter, Insta and Tik Tok.

Special Children’s Group
Special Children Playgroup is a friendly, supportive, parent-led group for babies and children under 5 with additional needs. This includes babies who’ve spent time in special or intensive care (SCBU or NICU), toddlers with developmental delays, and young children with special educational needs or disabilities (SEND).
Normally, the group runs every Thursday 10:00-12:00 at the Slade Children’s Centre, SE18 2QQ. It’s free, drop-in, and no referral or diagnosis is necessary. We have a lovely room with a sensory tent, cosy corner, outdoor play area, spacious changing facilities and access to a kitchen. During term time we organise music, signing or sensory activities most suited to younger or less mobile children. In school holidays we are joined by siblings for more active play.
During the Covid-19 pandemic, we are not able to meet in person at playgroup but we are still keeping in touch online.
You can join our Facebook group here and we are also holding weekly video meetings via Zoom (details on the Facebook group).
You can also read a blog from Victoria Maynard, who set up the group, here.
The Greenwich Down’s Group is a parent-led support group, whose main aim is to provide support to families who have a member with Down’s syndrome. We support parents with a new diagnosis, sign-posting them to local services and charities which can help them to access support. We also provide opportunities for families to meet up and share experiences and for siblings to get together and make friends and support each other. Within our group, we have a wide range of different experiences so that we can support families at every stage of their journey and offer advice on various issues.
We usually have regular meet-ups and social events throughout the year, including summer and Christmas parties and outings, where families can spend time together. We also have a regular monthly group on the first Tuesday of the month at the Brookhill children’s centre, where parents can chat while their children play and engage in arts and crafts. We have visits from various local professionals to advise families. We also raise funds through raffles and sponsored events so that we can continue to provide all of our activities at no cost to our families.
During the Covid19 lockdown period, we are unfortunately able to meet in person, but we can still support families either by phone or via Whatsapp/our Facebook group, which you can find via this link: https://www.facebook.com/groups/greenwichdg/?ref=bookmarks.
We have also been sharing regular updates regarding the Coronavirus from the Down’s Syndrome Association, including activities to do with your babies/children to help them with their development during the lockdown: https://www.downs-syndrome.org.uk/coronavirus-covid-19/
