Home-Start Greenwich

Since 1993, Home-start Greenwich has been supporting families living in the Royal Borough of Greenwich who need us and have a child in the family who is under 5.

There are times in our life when we all need help and friendship regardless of whether we are rich or poor, settled or transient. Having a young family is a challenge for everyone and if there are additional pressures it can be too much to cope with. It is easy to feel there is nowhere to turn

Turn to us - We can help

With the help of our trained volunteers we can offer support to get you through with encouragement, help, friendship and practical knowledge

Family Services

At Home-Start, we understand that being the parent of young children can be a stressful time, especially if you are coping with other challenges as well. It can be hard to enjoy your children and still find time and energy to care for yourself. That's why Home-Start Greenwich was set up.
Families come to us with a very wide range of needs. It could be:

  • Isolation
  • Post-natal depression
  • Coping with toddler behaviour
  • Managing a long-term disability or illness - your own or your child's
  • Stressful life changes such as multiple births, bereavements or relationship breakdown
  • Struggling with financial problems or poor housing.

Whatever the issues you are facing, Home-Start will do our best to help where and when you feel you need it most.

After an introductory meeting, your volunteer will visit you weekly: either in your home or to go on outings or visits with you. In nearly all cases, we find that families and volunteers quickly build up a warm and trusting relationship that has many rewards for both sides. And, if for some reason it doesn't work out, don't worry: we understand that this can happen sometimes, and we'll find you a new volunteer as soon as we can.

A Home-Start co-ordinator will also meet with you regularly to check you are happy with the way things are going, and make any changes if you need them.

When we accept a referral, we ask each family what kind of volunteer they would like, and what they feel they need most help with - then match them accordingly.

All our volunteers are carefully chosen for their friendly, approachable personalities and they have all been DBS-checked.

Many Early Years Settings have a similar approach to meeting the needs of pupils with Special Educational Needs/ and or disabilities, and are supported by the Local Authority to ensure that all children, regardless of their specific needs, make the best possible progress...

    Refer a Family

We will welcome your referral of a family in need of our support. However, all the referrals we receive are assessed and a decision is made as to whether or not we will be able to provide support from a volunteer or through one of our Family Groups in the near future. If it is impossible for us to support the family, you will receive a written response from us within 2 weeks of our receipt of your referral. Most, but not all, areas of Greenwich are covered. Contact us for more information.

If your referral is accepted a Home-Start Co-ordinator will contact the referred family within 2 weeks and arrange to visit the family within 4 weeks of the receipt of your referral. At this stage we will make one of the following decisions based on available resources:

      1. Immediate support is available and the family will be informed of this
      2. With the agreement of the family they will be placed on our waiting list for a max. of 3 months
      3. The family will be informed that we will not be able to offer any support

You will be kept informed of all decisions made. Please be aware that we do not knowingly put a volunteer into a household where the perpetrator of physical domestic abuse lives.

    Could you make a difference?

At the heart of Home-Start is the belief that parents play the key role in giving their children the best start in life and that other parents have the experience and understanding to support those families who need help.

Our volunteers are committed and caring people who offer their time freely. They are usually parents themselves and bring with them personal experience, skills and knowledge of the resources available within their local area.

They are friendly and approachable and can be relied on and trusted by parents to listen without being judgemental, and to respect the needs of each individual family.

    All volunteers...

Undertake an 8 week course of preparation, which takes place one day a week 9.30am - 2.30pm.

This fully prepares volunteers for their role and they:

  • Receive lots of support both during the preparation course and after, when they are supporting Home-Start families from a designated co-ordinator
  • Can access additional training and social events throughout the year
  • Receive out of pocket travel expenses incurred whilst volunteering for Home-Start.
  • After 50 hours of volunteering, can be given a reference
  • Volunteer Pack
